Why I Always Use an eSIM for Travel

Staying connected abroad has never been easier or more affordable since I discovered eSIMs. Here is a complete guide to why I’ve embraced this innovative travel technology and how you can do the same.

My Journey with eSIMs

This year, I made the switch to eSIMs, and I’ll never look back.  Like many travelers, I’ve spent years swapping physical SIM cards and dealing with the hassle of setting up phone plans in different countries. The process was often time-consuming and frustrating.

Now, thanks to eSIMs, those struggles are a thing of the past. This digital alternative to traditional SIM cards has transformed how I stay connected while traveling.

In this guide, I’ll explain what an eSIM is, how to use one, and why it’s become my go-to solution for staying connected abroad.

Why I Love Using an eSIM for Travel

eSIMs are simple, stress-free, and incredibly convenient. For someone like me who frequently travels internationally, they’ve eliminated countless headaches.

One of the biggest benefits is that I no longer need to juggle multiple phone numbers or rely on expensive roaming plans. For instance, I can purchase an eSIM online, load it onto my phone, and stay connected the moment I land at the airport without needing a physical SIM card or, worse, waiting to by a burner phone to use while I’m travelling.

What Is an eSIM?

An eSIM (embedded SIM) works like a traditional SIM card, but it’s entirely digital. Instead of buying and inserting a physical SIM card, you purchase your eSIM and data plan online. Once purchased, you follow the provider’s instructions to activate it via your phone’s settings.

Think of it as a virtual version of a regular SIM card, designed to simplify the process of getting connected.

How to Use an eSIM for Travel

Using an eSIM is incredibly easy. Here’s a quick step-by-step guide:

  1. Choose Your eSIM Plan
Browse different eSIM options to compare plans, destinations, and pricing. Think about your data needs and travel destination when making your choice.
  2. Purchase Your eSIM
Once you’ve selected a plan, confirm that your phone supports and eSIM.  After purchasing, you’ll receive a confirmation email with setup instructions.
  3. Follow the Setup Instructions
Each eSIM provider has a slightly different activation processes, but they’re all straightforward. Typically, you’ll scan a QR code sent, along with the instructions, sent to your e-mail.  This process allows you to load the eSIM electronically onto your phone without removing your current SIM.
  4. Activate Your eSIM
Once at your destination, turn off the data setting your primary SIM (or disable it completely), and enable your eSIM. Activate mobile data to start using the internet seamlessly.

Why Use an eSIM for Travel?

In my experience, eSIMs are the easiest and most cost-effective way to get data abroad. They save time and eliminate the need to visit local stores to set up plans or purchase physical SIM cards.

Here’s why I’m hooked on eSIMs:

  • Convenience: The entire process—from purchase to activation—can be done online.
  • Flexibility: You can keep your primary SIM active while using an eSIM, making it easy to switch between numbers.
  • Cost-Effectiveness: Many eSIM plans are affordable, especially if you only need a small amount of data.

Even if you’re not tech-savvy, the easy-to-follow instructions to guide you through the setup process.

Frequently Asked Questions About eSIMs

Can I Get an International Phone Number with an eSIM?

Yes! There are options for phone and data plans, allowing you to get a local phone number. However, I typically rely on messaging apps like WhatsApp and Messenger, so I only purchase data plans.  You can also still use your regular mobile number by enabling “Wi-Fi” calling.  Even though it’s called Wi-Fi calling, it really uses data (VoIP) to complete the calls.  Just be sure to disable “calling” on your regular SIM so you don’t get charged.

How Much Does an eSIM Cost?

eSIMs are a bargain compared to international roaming rates, even when compared to those special international day pass rates.

In the US, traditional mobile carriers such as AT&T and Verizon currently charge $12 per day with a $120 per month cap when traveling internationally.  By comparison, a 30-day eSIM covering 42 Countries is only $20.00 for the entire month!  That’s an entire vacation for less than the cost of two days.

Are There Any Downsides?

The only possible downside is having an older phone model that may not support an eSIM.  Some people also worry about security, but if your eSIM provider doesn’t even load their “app” on your phone, there’s no security risk there.

Final Thoughts

eSIMs have revolutionized how I stay connected while traveling. They’re simple, affordable, and perfect for my travel style. Whether you need internet for navigation, contacting friends, or sharing your adventures online, an eSIM is a fantastic option.
